IS THERE A HISPANIC MARKETING BOOM?

Português: Capa do ebook Facebook Marketing

I have heard marketers frequently say, “A data-driven decision is always a good decision.” I don’t necessarily agree with that all the time – insights, innovation, and a healthy measure of gut certainly play a large role in my own marketing decisions, along with paying attention to regular data-oriented updates on what’s happening in Denny’s demographics and market segments.

But anyone who says numbers don’t go into marketing is sorely mistaken, particularly large, growing numbers that signify dramatic change and opportunity. Here’s one number where it is very easy to see the obvious opportunity –the Hispanic population in the U.S. is growing at three times the rate of the overall population. A number like that is a marketer’s dream.

I would encourage all marketers, and in particular those of consumer brands, to consider the dollars that the Hispanic community spends every year and determine a strategy to make sure you are effectively engaging with this growing population – in their own language. By 2050, the U.S. census estimate projects the Hispanic population will more than double its size today, surpassing the 100 million mark. Now that’s a number I’ll certainly be paying attention to.

WHAT IS MITT ROMNEY’S POSITION ON HISPANIC ISSUES? IS HE REALLY A RACIST OR IS HE SIMPLY ENFORCING THE LAW?

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ speaking at CPAC in Washington D.C. on Februar...

MITT ROMNEY’S POSITION ON HISPANIC ISSUES
The Iowa Caucus proved one thing for certain: Mitt Romney is still the GOP candidate to beat. While Rick Santorum rode a stunning surge in the caucus, Romney still came out first (if only by eight votes). The former Massachusetts governor has run a highly disciplined and well-oiled campaign that, though solid, has yet to catch fire with the GOP primary voting public. From his stance on gun control, to his positions on health care and immigration, Romney has drawn criticism from both the right and the left for supporting radically different policies at different moments of his political life. Fox News Latino has compiled a list of some issues key to the Hispanic vote and where Mitt Romney stands:

Immigration

Romney’s stance toward immigration can be described as evolving. He has been criticized for changing his mind on what to do about undocumented immigrants living in the U.S., sometimes arguing for a path to citizenship and at other times calling that amnesty. In a 2006 interview with Bloomberg, Romney sat in the middle saying “we need to begin a process of registering those people, some being returned and some beginning the process of applying for citizenship and establishing legal status.”

Currently, however, Romney strongly opposes any any immigration reform that leads to a path to legal status or citizenship, regardless of how long an undocumented immigrant has spent living in the country, whether they have American citizen family members or dependents, and their behavior and accomplishments.

Over the weekend while campaigning in Iowa, Romney also said that he strongly opposed the DREAM Act –proposed legislation that would legalize the status of people brought to the country as minors and were either attending college or enlisted in the military– and would veto any legislation that gives “dreamers” a path to citizenship. While he said before that he opposed the legislation, the comment made on Saturday was the first time he explicitly said that he would veto it.

Like many of this fellow GOP hopefuls, Romney is also opposed to the idea of sanctuary cities –localities that refuse to share local police information with a federal immigration database.

Border Security

Romney is in the camp that believes that Islamist extremist groups are using Mexico and the rest of Latin America as a staging ground for attacks on the United States. “We have, right now, Hezbollah, which is working throughout Latin America, in Venezuela, in Mexico, throughout Latin America, which poses a very significant and imminent threat to the United States of America,” he said during a recent debate.

Romney ties the idea of border security to the immigration and is a supporter of a fence between the U.S. and Mexico. He’s also a proponent of the government’s E-Verfiy system, which makes employers certify that their workers are legally allowed to work in the U.S. “I am in favor of building a fence and having a secure border. I am in favor of electronic verification system. The big debate is those who have already came here illegally,” Romney said back in 2007, according to IowaPolitics.com.

Economy

In September of last year Romney introduced his economic plan that argues the best way to revive the economy is to get the government to stay out of the way of corporations. The Bain Capital co-founder highlighted overhauling federal tax, regulatory, trade and energy policies and also took tough stances on China and labor unions. His plan wants to increase trade, energy production, human capital, and labor flexibility.

“It is at once a deeply conservative return to policies that have served our nation well and a highly ambitious departure from the policies of our current leadership. In short, it is a plan to get America back to work,” Romney’s website said:

Healthcare

Romney said that if he was elected he would immediately work to repeal the national healthcare legislation passed in 2010,also known as Obamacare, and replace it with market-based reforms. He said that this would empower states and individuals and reduce health care costs.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney signed into law a private, market-based reform that ensures the state’s citizens will have health insurance and in 2007 he revealed his national health care plan that would allow states to choose individual health care plans for their fellow citizens.

Speaking specifically about Obamcare, Romney has said that it “is unhealthy for America. It raises taxes, slashes the more private side of Medicare, installs price controls, and puts a new federal bureaucracy in charge of health care. It will create a new entitlement even as the ones we already have are bankrupt. For these reasons and more, the act should be repealed. That campaign begins today,” he said, according to Forbes.

Romney acknowledges that his plan is not perfect, but highlighted that it received bipartisan support, while Obama’s plan had no Democratic backing.

HOW DO YOU RESEARCH PRODUCTS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BUY?

The Hispanic Blog

How do you research products and services that are for you personally? Great, now tell me about your company’s Marketing Strategy? Are you a “Change Agent?”

(1) 86% of people skip TV commercials.

(2) 46% decline in tech Trade Show spending

(3) 44% of Direct Mail is never opened

(SOURCE: EPA.GOV)

WORLDWIDE THERE ARE 88 BILLION SEARCHES PER MONTH ON GOOGLE: 3 BILLION PER DAY; 121 MILLION PER HOUR; 2 MILLION PER MINUTE AND 34K PER SECOND. (SOURCE: SEARCH ENGINE LAND)

Just last night in the Final 3 minutes of the Super Bowl Twitter reported that there were 10,000 tweets per second. Furthermore, 57% of Internet users search the web everyday; 46% of those daily searches are to get information on products or services; and 20% of monthly Google users are for local businesses. (Source Google)

MARKETERS HAVE SHIFTED THEIR BUDGETS AWAY FROM “INTERRUPTION ADVERTISING” AND IN TWO YEARS THEY HAVE DOUBLED THEIR BUDGET FOR SOCIAL MEDIA. RANKING HIGH ON SEARCH ENGINES IS NO LONGER OPTIONAL, IT’S CRITICAL.

You may be asking yourself can’t a business simply buy ads and put them on Google, Yahoo, Bing and/or even Facebook? Unfortunately, 70% of the links “search users” click on are ORGANIC (or NOT PAID ADVERTISEMENTS)! If you go to any website, you will see the edges inundated with ads, then the search results Google shows you are organic. This means that the results Google put up on the first page was due to the articles and/or videos being the most popular and/or visited sites for the search criteria you entered. Therefore, a social media expert can implement a strategy that will get your corporation or small business on the organic Top 3 list. If you still believe you don’t need to hire a social media expert, then I will leave you with this:

  • 70% of the links “search users” click on are organic.
  • 60% of all organic clicks go to the top three organic search results.
  • 75% never scroll past the first page on Google.

Additionally, here are some more facts for you:

  • US Internet users spend 3 times more on blogs and social network than on email.
  • 2/3 of US Internet users regularly use a social network.
  • For the young ones (12-17), their email usage dropped by 59%.

FACT: SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A FAD. IT’S A REVOLUTION THAT HAS OVERCOME EVERY INDUSTRY. BOTTOM LINE, IF GOOGLE CAN’T FIND YOU, NEITHER WILL ANYONE ELSE!

There is a reason why Coca-Cola put so much money and effort into making their Social Media strategy over the top phenomenal. Coca-Cola is known to always be one step ahead of the game and for that I commend you Coca-Cola! Here are a couple of pictures that were tweeted last night 🙂

BE YOUR OWN ICON: SOFIA VERGARA AND HER SPANISH ACCENT

The Hispanic Blog

Be your own icon! The Latin culture in America can make people feel ashamed that they try to be a “follower” with the hopes that they will fit in. Simply look at Modern Family’s, Sofía Vergara, who recently revealed that she spent a lot of money trying to “fix” her Colombian accent when she started acting. “At the beginning, I thought I could fix my accent to make it sound like something else, so I spent a lot of money and time to change it,” Sofia recently shared. “I was going to auditions and I was putting all my concentration on changing the next word to a different accent so my acting completely disappeared. I was just thinking about the pronunciation. I was getting no response from directors or anything because it was terrible.”  Every person will give you a list of flaws he/she thinks they have, but the truth is, our “flaws” are our greatest gifts. Just look at Barbara Streisand, Cher, Julia Roberts, etc., all women that we call icons. Therefore, I leave you with this…

DID YOU KNOW AMERICAN FOOTBALL AND SOCCER CAME FROM THE SAME SPORT?

The Hispanic Blog

IT’S A FACTFootball sports all involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal. The first game of rugby in Canada is generally said to have taken place in Montreal, in 1865, when British Army officers played local civilians. The Montreal Football Club was formed in 1868, the first recorded football club in Canada. In 1869, the first game played in the U.S. under FA code occurred, between Princeton and Rutgers – also considered first U.S. game of college football. However, American football would come from rugby, not association football. The modern form grew out of a match between McGill University of Montreal, and Harvard University in 1874.

At the time, Harvard students are reported to have played the Boston Game — a running code — rather than the FA-based kicking games favored by U.S. universities. This made it easy for Harvard to adapt to the rugby-based game played by McGill and the two teams alternated between their respective sets of rules. Within a few years, however, Harvard had both adopted McGill’s rugby rules and had persuaded other U.S. university teams to do the same. In 1876, at the Massasoit Convention, it was agreed by these universities to adopt most of the Rugby Football Union rules, with some variations. Princeton, Rutgers and others continued to compete using soccer-based rules for a few years before switching to the rugby-based rules of Harvard and its competitors. U.S. colleges did not generally return to soccer until the early 20th century.
