Race and clothing are not the issues at hand but JUSTICE is. Treyvon Martin could have been my son or grandson and to be shot in cold blood for wearing a hoodie and holding skittles is an act that we must not let go unpunished. Let us not stand down until their is JUSTICE for Trayvon; the Stand Your Ground Law in Florida is destroying the American judicial system and it must be changed now!”  -TEXAS LULAC Chief of Staff Mary Ramos

Houstonians turned out in droves at two rallies for Trayvon Martin, Sunday. Many, despite the heat, wore hoodies just as Martin did when he was shot and killed.

Elected officials as well as several hundred people came out to just in front of Houston’s city hall to protest the violence that claimed the Florida teen’s life.
“Somebody has said that wearing the hoodie was the reason the person was assaulted. And I’m here to tell you that wearing a hoodie does not make you a hood. Wearing a hoodie does not mean you’re not good. Wearing a hoodie means you’re doing something lawful in this country. And we’re going to protect everyone that wears a hoodie,” U.S. Representative Al Green, D-Houston said.

Elected officials urged no violence, as word circled a bounty has been placed on the alleged suspect, George Zimmerman.
“The alleged perpetrator can be arrested. No bounty is necessary. He can be arrested today as we speak in this place. No bounty can be necessary,” U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston said.
Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sabrina Fulton, also spoke to the crowd by phone.

“We really appreciate everything. We really appreciate the support and just to know that we are not alone in this fight,” Fulton added.
Music united one crowd earlier in the day and the love of music also united others at Emancipation Park.
Quanell X along with several popular Houston rappers took to the stage to stand up for Martin, including Bun B.
“I got a child. That could have been my child. I’m somebody’s child, that could have been me. And I would hope that somebody, anybody would get up and take a stand for it,” Bun B said.
Hoodies could be seen everywhere. People also carried bags of skittles, that was what authorities say Martin had in his hands the night he was killed.
People united all for one cause, to stop this kind of violence, even when it doesn’t happen in their own backyard.
“It’s just amazing to see what Houstonians can do when the time comes,” Gwendolyn Foley, a rally supporter said.

WILL ATTACKS ON VOTING RIGHTS ACT ALSO MOBILIZE BLACK TURNOUT?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Rep. Karen Bass (D-California) has an interesting theory about how to handle assaults on women’s health care issues and efforts to disenfranchise certain voters, as well as the personal and often racist attacks onPresident Obama. Use them as incentives, she said, to not only help him win re-election, but also so Democrats can regain control of the House and retain the Senate.

“We get real motivated when one of us is attacked,” Bass said during Tuesday’s Leading Women Definedluncheon.

Bass said that Republicans developed a “brilliant long-term strategy” that included regaining control of the House of Representatives and several state legislatures just in time for redistricting. But it may not work out as planned, Bass noted, because of the demographic shifts that have taken place and the growth of minority populations. She believes that’s why states are working to implement stricter voting rules that would make it difficult for many minorities to vote in 2012.

“The president has to be re-elected and we have to take back the House and keep the Senate. If we don’t do that then President Obama is going to be left in his last four years with a Republican-lite agenda because he’ll only have the power of the veto,” she said. “Given the way they’ve behaved over the past 15 months we can imagine what would happen in that second term.”

MSNBC contributor Joy-Ann Reid agreed that the GOP was attempting a long-term game, but said that they’re looking at a “long-term disaster” because by 2020, the electorate will be majority minority and the party still struggles to win minority support.

“They have to grow their Hispanic vote and other groups besides white males or they have to suppress the other team,” Reid said.

According to Bass, voter suppression is an issue that should motivate African-Americans to head to the polls this fall in droves.

“We can really use this. It generates emotion to know that they’ve gone so far to try to prevent Obama from being re-elected that they’ve turned back the clock on the civil rights agenda in terms of us being able to vote,” she said, adding that Democrats must use that as a catalyst and motivator to get African-Americans to turnout at the polls.

WHAT IS THE “SECURE COMMUNITIES” ACT: DON’T MEND IT…END IT!

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Any day now Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will announce a second round of “reforms” to the disgraced “Secure Communitiesdeportation program, S-Comm. And once again, it appears that ICE is more interested in spin than substance. The timing of the announcement–immediately before the DHS Office of Inspector General Report–seems primarily designed to take the pressure off of ICE rather than an honest attempt to address the fundamental flaws of the program.

We’ve been here before. In 2010, ICE tried the same tactic by announcing “reforms” to S-COMM’s predecessor, the 287(g) program to try to save the agency from the embarrassment of that year’s Inspector General report that described the program as an unmitigated disaster.

“Secure Communities” turns local police into defacto agents of deportation, forcing them to enforce unjust immigration laws, inviting racial profiling, and undermining community safety. It’s a program that has been leading to the “Arizonification” of the country, and has placed ICE under fire since it’s start in 2008. The only way forward on S-Comm is termination.

Since its inception, “Secure Communities” has gained fame for outright deception, starting with its very name. And now, after the release of thousands of internal emails and the agency’s own deportation data, there is no longer any doubt that ICE lied to local lawmakers, Congress, and the American public.

So-called “Secure Communities”, “S-Comm” or “In-Secure Communities” as it has been dubbed is the most recent attempt of ICE-DHS to control the immigration “problem”. This anti-immigrant program allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local law enforcement agencies to share all fingerprints processed at local jails. This mandated sharing occurs regardless of the type of crime and even if the charges are dropped. The inaccurately named program, “Secure Communities” was said to have been initiated to target “level one” criminals (kidnappers, drug dealers, murders), but in practice has been successful in targeting jay-walkers, victims of domestic violence, mentally challenged citizens, and those who do not look “American”.

So why is the Administration holding on to a program that has a very public record of deception? One that law enforcement officers, Governors, cities, and Congressional representatives reject as damaging to public safety. And why is it continuing to operate the program in places like Georgia, with its unconstitutional anti-immigrant hate law, HB 87, while finally suspending it–at least partially–in Alabama and restricting it in Maricopa County? Clearly, this violates common sense. It also demonstrates a distorted sense of priorities.

In its blind quest to meet its arbitrary deportation quota of 400,000 people per year, the Obama Administration is driving a wedge between communities and local police, making it more difficult to solve crimes, and turning a blind eye to the fact that people are being placed into deportation through unconstitutional arrests. Civil immigration enforcement above public safety and constitutional protections? Really?

The upcoming announcement will be a significant opportunity for the President to demonstrate leadership on a program that has come to symbolize his broken immigration promises. Will it be business as usual or will the Obama Administration finally abandon their growing legacy of deportation? Will the Obama Administration stop attempting to convince the public that ICE may reform itself, despite every indicator that it’s incapable? Will the Obama Administration embrace the consensus against S-Comm or continue gripping onto the program despite its failure?

The next few days will tell. For the communities that are left to cope with the disasters of the Administration’s draconian immigration enforcement policies, the commitment to break ICE’s hold continues regardless of this month’s announcement. Communities reeling from this growing crisis have already documented the conclusive demand that S-COMM be terminated. Their pledge to restore trust and to break ICE’s hold on their community and the country will only grow stronger.

THE MYTH OF THE UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS: THEY DO PAY TAXES AND HERE’S WHAT THEY PAID EACH STATE IN 2010

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

It’s a myth that illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes, says Dulce Guerroro, a self-confessed illegal immigrant living in Mableton, Georgia.

Guerrero’s whole family is undocumented, except for her 13-year old younger brother, who was born in the U.S. and is a U.S. citizen. She says that they all work and pay taxes through their Internal Revenue System (IRS) issued Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs).

“People always, always point out that we don’t pay taxes, which is a complete lie,” Guerrero told Business Insider.

“We have a government issued tax ID number. So the government knows very well who we are. They know very well where we live and they have all of our information. I am sure if they ever wanted to pick us up, since they have our tax ID number, they have our information. We pay taxes just like everyone else.”

Business Insider has interviewed four illegal immigrants in the past few weeks and all have said they have filed and paid taxes through an ITIN. However, the IRS is prohibited by law to share any information regarding the tax payers with other governmental agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security. “The internal revenue code really does not differentiate between legal or illegal status,” IRS representative Patricia Kirk told Fox News.

According to the Associated Press, in 2006 the then IRS Commissioner, Mark Everson, agreed with Guerrero when he told Congress that “the ITIN program is bringing taxpayers into the system.” Furthermore, having ITIN enables immigrants to contribute to the U.S. economy by enabling them to open bank accounts, obtain mortgages and establish a record of residency and taxpaying.

Social Security Administration (SSA) has also taken a positive outlook on immigration in the past. “Overall, any type of immigration is a net positive to Social Security. The more people working and paying into the system, the better,” Mark Hinkle, Deputy Press Officer at SSA told the AP in 2008. “It does help the system remain solvent.”

While the IRS does not have an estimate of how many illegal immigrants pay income tax, it has been issuing ITINs to foreigners without a Social Security number since 1996. Everson told Congress “many illegal aliens, utilizing ITINs, have been reporting tax liability to the tune of almost $50 billion from 1996 to 2003.”

Hinkle told the AP that the Social Security and Medicare taxes from mismatched W2s for the same period was $41.4 billion, adding up to about $90 billion in federal taxes during the eight-year period.

These numbers are fairly similar to those that Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy came up with when calculating taxes paid by undocumented immigrants. Their final figure was $11.2 billion in 2010. Check out the breakdown of this figure by state:
