WHO WAS THE HISPANIC WARREN MORROW?

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Latino advocate Morrow dies at age 34

Warren Morrow, an advocate for Latino businesses who founded a Clive company that helps credit unions attract Hispanic members, died early Wednesday, his wife, Christina Fernandez-Morrow, said.

Morrow, a graduate of Grinnell College, was chief executive of Coopera Consulting, a firm built on the belief that by targeting Latino customers, financial institutions can both make money and help improve quality of life for the population.

He died suddenly Wednesday morning, just as his efforts in Iowa and around the country were beginning to bear fruit. A valve in his heart malfunctioned and his heart stopped, his wife said. He was 34.

Morrow was born in Mexico City to an American father and Mexican mother, and moved to Tucson, Ariz., in elementary school. His mother, a well-educated woman, struggled with the transition to American life and felt she had to work her way up from the bottom, leaving a strong impression on Morrow as he went off to college.

While at Grinnell, he founded a nonprofit called the Latino Leadership Project to help young Hispanics go to college. He eventually realized that the problem he was trying to address was at its root caused by financial instability in the Latino community. For instance, his wife said, a young Latino might forgo college to work and help pay the family’s bills.

“I came to realize that the disparity in education was a symptom of a larger problem,” Warren Morrow told the Register in 2011. “The root issues are the disparities in access to assets, access to wealth, economic stability in the household.”

The Democratic Party has chosen Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to chair the party’s national convention this summer in Charlotte, N.C. in a move by the party to woo Latino support.

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, says in an email to DNC members that Villaraigosa will be nominated to chair the September convention.
Villaraigosa was elected mayor in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.

He is the only the third Mexican American to have ever held the office in Los Angeles and the first in over 130 years.

Villaraigosa was co-chairman of Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s 2008 presidential campaign and was a member of President Obama’s Transition Economic Advisory Board.
The L.A. mayor has graced the covers of Newsweek and Time magazine as one of the country’s 25 most influential Latinos.

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Arizona‘s Emerging Latino Vote

PHOENIX (CBS5) -The Latino vote is growing in Arizona and lawmakers are taking notice. State Senator Jerry Lewis was among the speakers at the Town Hall today called Arizona’s Emerging Latino Vote.Arizona Latino Research Enterprise and the Raul H. Castro Institute at Phoenix Collegesponsored the event. The groups say Latino voter turnout in the Phoenix city elections tripled last year and of the total Latino voters in the state eighty percent of them are concentrated in Maricopa and Pima counties.

“So if you hit those counties and you’re effective at what you’re doing you’re going to have a dramatic impact, not just on those counties, the concentration of those urban center there, but you’re going to have an impact, ultimately on general elections, statewide elections,” shared James Garcia with the Arizona Hispanic Chamber.

The groups say Latino voters played a pivotal role in at least four races in Maricopa County last year including the recall of former State Senate President Russell Pearce.

WILL HISPANICS COME OUT AND VOTE IN 2012?

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ: VOTER TURNOUT

Number of Hispanic voters projected to increase 26 percent

Hispanic voter turnout in 2008 was 9.7 million, and is expected to reach 12.2 million this year. The interest group said the increased projection is due in part to the estimated 50,000 Latinos who turn 18 each month.

“Latinos continue to reshape the nation’s political map, and the Latino electorate will play a decisive role in Election 2012,” NALEO executive director Arturo Vargas said in a statement.

If the group’s projection holds true, Latinos will account for at least 8.7 percent of the country’s voters in November.
