DO REPUBLICANS HAVE SOMEONE IN CHARGE OF HISPANIC OUTREACH?

Bettina Inclan, Hispanic Outreach Director, May Have Toughest Job In GOP

“I’m really proud of the fact that we’re going to announce the expansion of the RNC‘s Hispanic Outreach Effort today,” he said. “We all know it’s the fastest growing demographic in America, and Latinos play a vital role in all of our communities. The Republican Party believes that it’s crucial to involve Latinos at every level because diverse voices will lead to a stronger and obviously more vibrant party.”

Inclan directs a multipronged battle strategy. She attended the Hispanic Leadership Network conference last month and has been doing interviews on television and radio in English and Spanish, holding call-in press conferences with reporters across the country, and promoting the “Obama failed” theme in her own tweets and those of the newly launched @RNCLatinos. The party put out a YouTube video in Spanish titled “Unkept Promises: Nevada Edition” and has been actively posting updates on its new tumblr blog aimed at Hispanics.

ARE UNIVISION AND DISNEY CREATING A NETWORK?

THE HISPANIC BLOG CREATED BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

HOW UNIVISION & DISNEY UNITE BEFORE THE 2012 ELECTION

MIAMI (AP)Univision and Disney are in talks to create a 24-hour news channel for Latinos in English, two sources close to the negotiations said Monday.

Both sources declined to go on the record because they were not authorized to speak.

The goal would be to begin broadcasting before the November presidential election. That would give the network plenty of time to provide political coverage geared toward Hispanics, who are considered influential swing voters in states like Florida, New Mexico and Colorado.

Univision is the nation’s largest Spanish-language media company, and it has long prided itself on its Spanish-language content. In recent years, officials have quietly acknowledged that in order to maintain and expand viewership, they need to provide content to second- and third-generation Latinos who speak English as their first language.

Univision officials and ABC News spokesman Jeff Schneider declined to comment on Monday.

The move comes in response to the 2010 census, which showed U.S. born Latinos made up nearly 60 percent of the growth in the nation’s Hispanic population over the last decade.

The proposed deal also reflects the stepped up efforts of mainstream media companies to target Latinos. Fox News added its Fox News Latino website in 2010 and Huffington Post now has an online Huffpost LatinoVoices site. Meanwhile, NBC Universal has increased the cross-pollination between its NBC News division and that of its Spanish language network, Telemundo.

Top Telemundo news anchor Jose Diaz-Balart has anchored NBC News and MSNBC programs. NBC also recently unveiled its NBC Latino tumblr website in English. Univision News also has a tumblr English site, and a small but growing social media presence.

Jorge Plasencia, vice chair of the National Council of La Raza and CEO of the Hispanic marketing firm Republica, which includes Univision among its clients, said he believes that a news channel in English would fulfill a niche.

“There’s nearly 50 million Latinos in the U.S. They do want to know what’s going on in Mexico, Puerto Rico and all over Latin America. The major networks don’t cover that news,” he said. “It’s hard for those networks to go into those issues in depth because they’re trying reach all of America.”

Univision and other Spanish-language networks have provided significant coverage of Latin America for their viewers. Plasencia believes second- and third-generation Latinos are still interested in that coverage, but they want it in English.

For Latinos who live in cities like Los Angeles, New York and Miami that have large Hispanic populations, local broadcasts often have Latino anchors and cover stories that are particularly relevant to the Hispanic community. But the national broadcasts are lagging in that type of coverage, he added.

“That’s why I think this and Huffpost LatinoVoices exist, because there’s an appetite,” Plasencia said.

Last month, SiriusXM’s Cristina Radio channel launched a new all-English political show, hosted by top Democratic and Republican Latina analysts, as well as a bilingual foreign affairs program out of Washington. Other online news sites are continuing to pop up.

Voxxi, a new Hispanic online news magazine, was throwing its launch party Tuesday at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Plasencia noted that the controversy over Arizona’s Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, over his aggressive efforts to seek out illegal immigrants, has received significant coverage on Spanish-language networks but not so much in English.

“This network will take our issues and make them mainstream because many other people besides Latinos may be watching,” he said.

Roberto Suro, a professor of journalism and public policy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, says finding the right audience may be tricky.

“There are several assumptions here. Is there room for another all-news channel? And within the Hispanic market, is there enough demand for an all-news channel?” Suro said.

Already CNN, Fox and MSNB compete in English. CNN en Espanol provides 24 hour coverage in Spanish.

The new channel would reflect the growing trend toward more niche audiences, but he added that the English-speaking Latino market is much more diverse than the Spanish-language market, Suro said.

“There’s a longstanding effort to try and create content for English speaking Latinos,” Suro said. “This is a very broad population segment, and the question is, “what is the identity? Is it heavily Hispanic, all about news about Latinos? Or is it who delivers the news? It’s an elusive brand.”

THIS DAY IN LATINO U.S. HISTORY JAN 31ST

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

ON THIS DAY IN 1914:

President Woodrow Wilson declares Phoenix’s Papago Saguaro National  Monument, now Papago Park, a national park for its “Splendid examples of the  giant and many other species of cacti and the yucca palm, with many additional  forms characteristic of desert flora (that) grow to great size and perfection  and are of great scientific interest, and numerous prehistoric photographs of archaeologial and ethnological value.

ON THIS DAY IN 1938:

12,000 San Antonio pecan shellers, mostly Hispanic women, walked off their jobs to protest a wage cut, beginning a three-month strike. The pecan-shelling industry was one of the lowest-paid in the United States, with a typical wage ranging between two and three dollars a week. In the 1930s Texas pecans accounted for approximately 50 percent of the nation’s production, with nearly 400 shelling factories in San Antonio alone. Working conditions were abysmal, and San Antonio’s high tuberculosis rate–148 deaths for each 100,000 persons, compared to the national average of 54–was blamed at least partially on the fine brown dust that permeated the air. The original strike leader was Emma Tenayuca Brooks, a well-known figure in San Antonio politics. In March 1938 both sides agreed to arbitration and reached an initial agreement on hourly wages of seven and eight cents, but shortly thereafter Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which established a minimum wage of twenty-five cents an hour. Concerned that the new law would encourage mechanization and displace thousands of shellers, the Congress of Industrial Organizations sought an exemption for pecan workers. The Department of Labor, however, denied the exemption, and over the next three years cracking machines replaced more than 10,000 shellers in San Antonio shops.

As a passionate Latina, I will continue to do everything in my power to inspire nuestra gente to “Get Out The Vote!”

WHAT ARE OBAMA’S VIEWS ON IMMIGRATION AND THE STUDENT DEBT CRISIS?

STUDENT DEBT CRISIS

Student debt rises to its highest & exceeds $1 Trillion. Thus, I’m informing my fellow Latinos on the impact as federal loans are not to be messed with. The government can garnish one’s income tax refunds and eventually one’s Social Security checks unless undue hardship can be proven. FYI less than 1% ever do. Thus, President Obama wants to introduce a Student Loan Forgiveness plan, which reduces payment to 10% of student’s income. After paying consistently for 20 years, then the debt is completely forgiven. Moreover, if the student chooses work in the service industry, his/her debt is forgiven in 10 years rather than 20. With more discretionary income, the government counts on consumer spending to increase. What do you think? Should students be forgiven of their debts? Also keep in mind a large percentage are middle aged.

DO LATINOS PREFER ROMNEY OR OBAMA?

According to polls conducted by Univision, Romney leads Latino vote in FL 46% to 43%, although nationwide the President leads 67% to 24%. Here’s where Romney stands on Latino issues. Immigration: Romney is strongly opposed to any reform, the *DREAM Act and *Sanctuary Cities. Border Security: Romney supports a fence at the border, is for system that makes employers certify workers are documented. Economy: His plan is to stay out of the way of corporations, overhauling federal tax, regulatory, trade and energy policies. He wants to increase trade, energy production, human capital, and labor flexibility by taking tough stances on China and labor unions. Healthcare: Repeal healthcare also known as Obamacare, and replace it with market-based reforms so states and individuals can reduce health care costs.

WHAT IS OBAMA’S STANCE ON IMMIGRATION? FYI this is simply his stance not necessarily what he has done for the Latino community. Currently, Latinos will inform you Obama broke most of his promises and thus why we as Latinos must make it our priority to GET OUT THE VOTE!

Immigration: Stop expelling undocumented workers. (01/11) Send 1,200 National Guard troops to southern border. (11/10) Anti-immigrant bitterness stems from joblessness. (01/10) Crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. (07/08) America has nothing to fear from today’s immigrants. (06/08) Comprehensive reform (06/08) Recognize humanity of immigrants (06/08) Encourage every student to learn a second language. (Feb 2008) Need to look at different aspects of immigration reform. (Feb 2008) Have border patrolled, surveillance, and deploy technology. (Feb 2008) Increasing the legal fees on immigrants is not helping. (Feb 2008) Deporting 12 million people is ridiculous and impractical. (Feb 2008) Immigration raids are ineffective. (Feb 2008) Solve the driver’s license issue with immigration reform. (Jan 2008) Immigrants are scapegoats for high unemployment rates. (Jan 2008) Health plan: not enough resources for illegal immigrants. (Jan 2008) Illegals shouldn’t work; but should have path to citizenship. (Dec 2007) Don’t deputize Americans to turn in illegal immigrants. (Dec 2007) OK to provide government services in Spanish. (Dec 2007) Comprehensive solution includes employers & borders. (Nov 2007) Undocumented workers come here to work, not to drive. (Nov 2007) Support granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. (Nov 2007) Fact Check: Lightning IS likelier than employer prosecution. (Nov 2007) Illegal immigrants’ lack of ID is a public safety concern. (Oct 2007) Immigration system is broken for legal immigrants. (Sep 2007) Reform must include more border security, and border wall. (Sep 2007) Sanctuary cities show that feds are not enforcing law. (Sep 2007) Pathway to citizenship, but people have to earn it. (Aug 2007) Let’s be a nation of laws AND a nation of immigrants. (Aug 2007) Do a better job patrolling the Canadian and Mexican borders. (Jun 2007) Give immigrants who are here a rigorous path to citizenship. (Jun 2007) Extend welfare and Medicaid to immigrants. (Jul 1998)

*Dream Act – legislation that gives minors a path to citizenship if they were brought into the country and are either attending college or enlisted in the military.

*Sanctuary cities – localities that refuse to share local police information with a federal immigration database.
