DOES UNIVISION HAVE THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF VIEWERS: CEO RANDY FALCO PUTS IN HIS TWO CENTS

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Spanish-language media giant Univision Communications on Friday reported improved fourth-quarter financials and vowed that it will continue to grow despite increased competition.

The privately-held company, led by CEO Randy Falco and chairman Haim Saban, posted a loss of $355.9 million, compared with a loss of $631.9 million in the year-ago period, which had been  dragged down by $452 million in losses and charges related to a legal settlement with Mexican broadcaster, content supplier and investor Grupo Televisa. Restructuring, severance and related charges rose to $9.3 million in the latest period from $4.9 million in the year-ago period. The company also cited an impairment loss of $12.5 million, compared to $8.6 million in the year-ago period.

Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization, a measure of profitability that focuses more on operations, increased 6.3 percent to $275.7 million. Revenue in the latest quarter rose 6.9 percent to $616.7 million. The company recorded revenue gains in its television and radio business, but not its interactive unit.

“The release of the 2010 U.S. Census results made 2011 a landmark year for Univision and the entire Hispanic media industry,” said Falco. “The Census results showed that our core audience, which is already one in six Americans, is expected to grow to one in three Americans in 40 years.”

To take advantage of the upside opportunity, “Univision is laying the groundwork for growth, investing in new networks and expanding our digital distribution capabilities to deliver the full value of our exclusive programming partnership with Televisa,” he added. “These efforts are enhancing Univision’s audience engagement, as demonstrated by strong ratings and persistent live viewership – Univision finished the fourth quarter with the highest percentage of live viewers in primetime compared to the major broadcast networks.”

On a conference call, Univision executives explained the significance of having the highest concentration of live viewers in the key 18-49 demo in primetime. Of Univision’s audience in that demo, 94 percent watch live, compared with 79 percent at NBC, 76 percent at  ABC and 75 percent at CBS and Fox, the company said.

Spanish-language media has been in transition as the latest Census has cast a spotlight on the sector, and other media and entertainment companies are eyeing opportunities to take advantage, Falco told analysts. “Now, every media executive wakes up thinking of two great growth opportunities – Hispanic and digital media,” he said.

However, Univision has an advantage as it has focused on this space for more than half a century, “and we are far and away the best at it,” Falco said. “We have built up a rare trust and loyalty with our audience.”

But the company won’t rest on its laurels, he emphasized, saying “it pays to be ahead of the curve.” Importantly, Falco said that “we also have the relevant content U.S. Hispanics crave,”  calling Univision’s exclusive access to Televisa content “a huge competitive advantage.”

Asked about rep0rts that Univision has discussed an English-language joint venture with ABC News, executives declined to comment on Friday.

Management touted the outlook for the political advertising season though, saying Univision is spending millions to launch its political sales force.

Comcast made a series of voluntary public interest commitments in connection with the NBCUniversal transaction, one of which is to launch 10 new independently owned and operated networks over the next eight years. Of the 10 networks, four will be majority African-American owned, two will be majority American Latino owned, two will be operated by American Latino programmers, and two will provide additional independent programming. Ultimately, each of the 10 networks will be added on select Comcast systems as part of the digital basic tier of service.

HOW DOES REPUBLICAN SENATOR MARCO RUBIO FEEL ABOUT FELLOW REPUBLICANS BEING ANTI-IMMIGRANT AND WILL HE BE THE NEXT VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE?

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Will Marco Rubio be the Next Vice Presidential Candidate?

He has said –over and over and over again– that he does not intend to be the GOP vice presidential nominee. But, evidently, the disclaimer matters little to the public. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida once again has emerged in a national poll as the favorite to occupy the slot that is a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Beating out household names such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Rubio was the top choice in a new poll that asked roughly 800 registered Republican and Independent voters across the country: “No matter who is the Republican nominee for president, if you could pick the vice presidential nominee, who would it be?”

After Rubio, respondents picked GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania, then Christie, then Palin.

“Any time you place ahead of Sarah Palin, call yourself a winner,” said Peter Woolley, director of the poll, which was conducted from Feb. 6-12 by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind. “Her name recognition and presence are formidable.”

The results, released Monday, come shortly after a straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference recently showed Rubio as an overwhelming favorite for the vice presidential slot. In the CPAC poll, Rubio was followed by Christie, and then Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

In the presidential straw poll, Mitt Romney was the top choice, followed by Santorum, former House Speaker Gingrich and Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

Rubio has not yet endorsed any of the GOP presidential candidates; his endorsement would be a big get for any of the contenders.

His thoughts on the words and actions of the contenders have carried weight. He’s a Tea Party favorite, a GOP star and, many say, the future of the Republican Party.

Rubio, 40, is one of Florida’s most popular leaders, particularly among Republicans. A Quinnipiac University poll released Jan. 10 found that nearly 80 percent of Republicans and nearly half of independents approved of the job he is doing. Only a quarter of Democrats liked his job performance.

“It’s pretty easy to see why Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is on every GOP presidential candidate’s vice presidential shot list,” said an article in U.S. News & World Report. “The freshman, Cuban-American senator laid out a passionate, succinct, and unifying conservative agenda more effectively than any of those actually vying for the presidency have thus far, during remarks he made at the Conservative Political Action Conference.”

At CPAC, Rubio asked: “What is the conservative movement? It’s pretty straightforward. We believe that the way prosperity is created is when people have the freedom and the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

Rubio has not hesitated to call out fellow Republicans when he feels they have erred.

He has taken exception to what he considers potentially self-destructive talk by Republicans about illegal immigration. He has urged the party to focus its rhetoric on legal immigration.

He assailed Gingrich for airing an ad in the Cuban-American senator’s home state calling Romney, considered the frontrunner in the GOP primary, “anti-immigrant.”

“This kind of language is more than just unfortunate,” Rubio was quoted as saying in The Miami Herald. “It’s inaccurate, inflammatory, and doesn’t belong in this campaign.”

No sooner did the news of Rubio’s discomfiture hit the Web than the Gingrich campaign say that it planned to pull the radio ad out of “respect for the senator’s wishes.”

“We respect Senator Rubio tremendously and will remove the ad from the rotation,” said Gingrich’s Florida campaign leader, Jose Mallea, according to The Miami Herald.

Echoing the sentiment other presidential contenders in the GOP primary have expressed, Gingrich said during a debate before the Florida primary that Rubio was worthy of consideration for vice president.

Asked the next day to elaborate on his statement, Gingrich said in an interview with Fox News Latino: “I think that anybody who has any sense as a presidential candidate is going to recognize that Marco Rubio has to be on the short list.”

“He is so talented, he is so competent, his background is so strong, he’s such a good speaker. . .he has an ability to reach out and help with the very rapidly growing Latino community across the whole country. . .Anyone who wouldn’t put him there I think is just not serious about how you win the presidency.”

DO YOU KNOW WHY WE CELEBRATE PRESIDENT’S DAY, HOW IT HAPPENED OR WHO INVENTED IT?

THE HISPANIC BLOG BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Happy President’s Day: Do You Know Why We Celebrate President’s Day, How it Happened or Who Invented It?

The observance of Washington’s Birthday began as an act of Congress in 1879. However, it was simply a holiday celebrated in Washington D.C. Then, in 1885 President Chester Allen Arthur signed off on the bill that implemented the federal holiday. This was the country’s first federal holiday that honored an American citizen, and thus the date chosen was of the great hero, warrior and president, Mr. George Washington.

According to the Julian calendar that was in effect during Washington’s life time meant back then his birthday was February 11, 1732. However, in 1752 the Gregorian calendar was adopted and translated Washington’s Birthday into February 22nd and was celebrated that very day.

Furthermore, in 1951, the President’s Day National Committee was formed and they tried to create President’s Day as a day that honored Presidents on March 4th. Please keep in mind that back then Washington’s birthday was celebrated the third Monday, Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated on February 12th and so three back to back holidays would be too much of a burden. Unfortunately, the Governors of a majority of the individual states issued proclamations declaring March 4 to be Presidents’ Day in their respective jurisdictions.

In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was created. What they did was took Washington’s Day, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and additionally would include Columbus Day which went from fixed calendar days to designated Mondays, so federal employees could enjoy three day weekends. This act took effect in 1971, making Washington’s Birthday to be celebrated the third Monday of every February. Later, there was legislation enacted that established the observance of Veteran’s Day would be on November 11th.

By the mid-1980s, with a push from advertisers, the term “Presidents’ Day” began its public debut. Keep in mind, Lincoln’s birthday was never a federal holiday, so a dozen state governments officially renamed their Washington’s Birthday observances as “Presidents’ Day”, “Washington and Lincoln Day“, or other such designations. However, “Presidents’ Day” is not always an all-inclusive term.

  • Alabama calls it “Washington and Jefferson Day,” even though Thomas Jefferson’s birthday is in April.
  • In Connecticut, Missouri and Illinois, while Washington’s Birthday is the federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is still a state holiday, and thus falls on February 12 regardless of what day of the week it is.
  • In Washington’s home state of Virginia, the holiday is legally known as “George Washington Day.”

Moreover, there is a mid-winter long weekend that six Canadian provinces instituted as a holiday which coincides with Washington’s Birthday: In Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario, it is Family Day; in Manitoba, Louis Riel Day; and Prince Edward Island it is Islander Day. The holidays do not honor anniversaries, and the date was selected, in part, to coincide with the U.S. holiday, since the economic and social lives of both countries are tightly intertwined.

WHO IS THE HISPANIC ON CELEBRITY APPRENTICE?

THE HISPANIC BLOG

Dayana Mendoza: Ready To Take Charge on The Celebrity Apprentice

The boardroom is about to get spicy.

Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza will be competing with the likes of Lisa Lampanelli, Debbie Gibson, Penn Jillette, Clay Aiken and Teresa Guidice for the title of The Celebrity Apprentice on the new season premiering this Sunday.

However, fierce competition is nothing new for this Venezuelan beauty.

After beating out hundreds of beautiful women vying for the role of Miss Venezuela in 2007, Mendoza went on to win the coveted role of Miss Universe in 2008.

Donald Trump, who owns The Miss Universe Organization, handpicked Mendoza for the show.

“He’s been a mentor for me, he’s been extremely helpful, and he suggested it would be something great for me to do,” Mendoza said regarding Trump.

Fox News Latino talked with the striking beauty about what we can expect in the 12th season of popular reality show.

In this competition, while the prize may not be a crown, it is something that the winner can share with a lot more people– a $250,000 check to the winner’s charity of choice.

Mendoza says she was ready for this new challenge. “The Miss Universe pageant has definitely taught me how to manage myself when people are trying to kill each other,” she joked.

photo Dayana Mendoza with Jessica Marie Gutierrez creator of the Hispanic Blog

“That’s exactly what happens with the Celebrity Apprentice, we are all fighting for the same goal, although we are all fighting for good,” said the former beauty queen.

Mendoza’s charity is the Latino Commission on AIDS. “I’ve been working with them since the Miss Universe Pageant,” she said.

She says she feels like she can “relate with the part of being a foreigner working in the United States.”

“To hang out with your community, to talk about the same things, in your same language, they made me feel so comfortable, they welcomed me and why wouldn’t I keep working with them when I feel they are my family,” Mendoza said of the organization.

For the first time in Celebrity Apprentice history, there are two Latinas competing for the grand prize, Mendoza and Venezuelan actress Patricia Velasquez.

“I was happy to be there with her, I didn’t know her before the show, but I was lucky to be working with somebody that was really genuine, a hard worker,” but not someone who would “step on anybody’s toes,” Mendoza said.

However someone who was not afraid to step on any toes, amongst other things, was comedian Lisa Lampanelli.

While Mendoza may have a crown she is no Drama Queen. It was comedian Lampanelli who took that title this season by making her mouth “part of her performance” quipped the Venezuelan.

After the Apprentice, Mendoza hopes to keep hosting, something she fell in love with it after hosting the E! Latino show “Relaxed.”

Her advice for anyone looking for success is “appreciating who you really are.” Mendoza said “a lot of people want to be like someone else or look like someone else, its appreciating and loving who you really are” that makes someone stand out.

The new season of The Celebrity Apprentice premieres this Sunday at 9PM EST on NBC.
