DID COCA-COLA SPAIN LAUNCH AN INSTAGRAM APP ON ANDROID BEFORE INSTAGRAM?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Coca-Cola is known for being one of the first and more innovative social media brands out there.

Coca-Cola was preparing the first app developed by a brand that is inspired on the successful Instagram application. While other brands are still assessing how to use the Instagram in their marketing strategy, Coca Cola Spain has taken the lead and developed its own ‘’parallel’’ photographic and mobile social network.

The beloved app Instagram continues to set a “new trend” in mobile applications and in photo-sharing habits and will probably continue inspiring more and more creative brands.

These screenshots show the app’s menu is very close to the current Instagram layout, with a photo share button in the center that the Coca-Cola app labels as “Felicidad,” Spanish for  happiness. The rest of the menu looks to be an exact match to the functionality of Instagram with one exception, a geolocation tab that shows a user photos around them on a map.

How Do Brands Succeed with Apps?

We know that for branded mobile apps, the success is largely determined by the app centering around something the end user wants to do often, daily if possible. Making the app into a useful tool like the Weather Channel or media companies can do, is a great example of this.

The goal is to become a utility that the end user needs, in order to cement that relationship. You do not just want the app user to download the app, you want them to use it over and over. So, building on top of an already successful app can be a very smart decision for a brand. There is a higher potential for built-in success.

Coca-Cola Spain also looks to be taking a light touch here with the branding. Focusing on their global “happiness” campaign rather than putting the Coca-Cola logo and product images everywhere. Putting the focus on the utility and not the brand’s logo could help it succeed.

Reinvent or Augment?

An important element here is that this app is rumored to be on Android. While the screenshots seems to come from an iPhone, I will assume the story is correct, so maybe the app will launch on both iOS and Android app markets. IF the Spanish app launches on Android, it could be a great opportunity, considering Instagram is not even on Android yet.

The original story quotes this new Coca-Cola app as a “parallel” social network. I am assuming that means the app can read and write to the Instagram API, but that is a little bit of a leap on my part (UPDATE: Phil Gonzalez says it is NOT built on the Instagram API). That would give it an immediate user base to build off of rather than starting from scratch. Many apps have similarly used the Foursquare API to build location apps. But, it seems unlikely that a brand would be one of the first people to access the write API on Instagram. The app could be successful either way.

While, to date, there has not been an app that can push images to Instagram, Fast Company is reporting that this will change today, when Hipstamatic and Instagram announce a photo sharing partnership that allows users to share their images from one app to the other, with attribution. Similar to how you can push updates from Foursquare to Twitter, and it is labeled as such.

Note: Coca-Cola IS on Instagram in at least two countries, Venezuela (cocacolave) and Brazil (cocacola_br).

DID COCA-COLA RACIALLY DISCRIMINATE?

Coca-Cola responds

Coca-Cola issued a statement saying, “Where discrimination is alleged, we conduct a thorough investigation.” It said it appears one of the plaintiffs was terminated five years ago and “other allegations were addressed and resolved even longer ago. Contrary to the allegations in the lawsuit, our investigation has not uncovered a culture of workplace discrimination. In fact, many minority associates have come forward to strongly disavow the allegations of discrimination contained in the lawsuit.”

“We have investigated, and will continue to investigate, all allegations of discrimination and harassment brought to our attention. We are confident that this matter will be resolved fairly and justly through the judicial system,” Coca-Cola said in the statement

The Coca-Cola Co.’s minority employees work in a “cesspool of racial discrimination,” says a lawsuit filed against a unit of the Atlanta-based beverage company.

David Alvarez et al. vs. Coca-Cola Refreshments USA Inc., which was filed in New York State Supreme Court in Queens on behalf of 16 current and former black and Hispanic workers, charges that an “endemic culture of racism” runs through the company’s management and supervisors at its New York bottling plans in Elmsford and Maspeth, N.Y. The suit was filed Jan. 3, but only publicized last week in the New York Daily News.

The lawsuit charges that the 16 plaintiffs “have suffered from the worst of its ills in terms of biased work assignments and allotment of hours, unfair discipline and retaliation, and a caustic work environment.”

Worst duties, seniority system

It says black and Hispanic workers “are typically assigned to the most undesirable and physically dangerous positions, and to tasks that are outside of their job descriptions.

“Meanwhile, the managers contravene the established seniority system by giving better jobs and more overtime hours to workers with less seniority than minority workers.

“As several of the plaintiffs have found, opportunities for advancement and promotion within the company are routinely biased against minority workers. Finally, the truck drivers among the plaintiffs have had their hours unfairly limited and prevented from working overtime, while white drivers do not have to face these problems,” the lawsuit says.

Claims of retaliation

The lawsuit also charged that plaintiffs who have complained have “faced swift retaliation from the white managers.”

The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory, emotional, psychological and punitive damages, lost compensation, front and back pay, injunctive relief, attorneys’ fees and any other damages permitted by law.

Commenting on the lawsuit, plaintiffs attorney Steve A. Morelli of the Law Office of Steven A. Morelli P.C. in Garden City, N.Y., said Coca- Cola’s hostile work environment is “clearly something that needs to be addressed.”

HOW DO YOU RESEARCH PRODUCTS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BUY?

How do you research products and services that are for you personally? Great, now tell me about your company’s Marketing Strategy? Are you a “Change Agent?”

(1) 86% of people skip TV commercials.

(2) 46% decline in tech Trade Show spending

(3) 44% of Direct Mail is never opened

(SOURCE: EPA.GOV)

WORLDWIDE THERE ARE 88 BILLION SEARCHES PER MONTH ON GOOGLE: 3 BILLION PER DAY; 121 MILLION PER HOUR; 2 MILLION PER MINUTE AND 34K PER SECOND. (SOURCE: SEARCH ENGINE LAND)

Just last night in the Final 3 minutes of the Super Bowl Twitter reported that there were 10,000 tweets per second. Furthermore, 57% of Internet users search the web everyday; 46% of those daily searches are to get information on products or services; and 20% of monthly Google users are for local businesses. (Source Google)

MARKETERS HAVE SHIFTED THEIR BUDGETS AWAY FROM “INTERRUPTION ADVERTISING” AND IN TWO YEARS THEY HAVE DOUBLED THEIR BUDGET FOR SOCIAL MEDIA. RANKING HIGH ON SEARCH ENGINES IS NO LONGER OPTIONAL, IT’S CRITICAL.

You may be asking yourself can’t a business simply buy ads and put them on Google, Yahoo, Bing and/or even Facebook? Unfortunately, 70% of the links “search users” click on are ORGANIC (or NOT PAID ADVERTISEMENTS)! If you go to any website, you will see the edges inundated with ads, then the search results Google shows you are organic. This means that the results Google put up on the first page was due to the articles and/or videos being the most popular and/or visited sites for the search criteria you entered. Therefore, a social media expert can implement a strategy that will get your corporation or small business on the organic Top 3 list. If you still believe you don’t need to hire a social media expert, then I will leave you with this:

  • 70% of the links “search users” click on are organic.
  • 60% of all organic clicks go to the top three organic search results.
  • 75% never scroll past the first page on Google.

Additionally, here are some more facts for you:

  • US Internet users spend 3 times more on blogs and social network than on email.
  • 2/3 of US Internet users regularly use a social network.
  • For the young ones (12-17), their email usage dropped by 59%.

FACT: SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A FAD. IT’S A REVOLUTION THAT HAS OVERCOME EVERY INDUSTRY. BOTTOM LINE, IF GOOGLE CAN’T FIND YOU, NEITHER WILL ANYONE ELSE!

There is a reason why Coca-Cola put so much money and effort into making their Social Media strategy over the top phenomenal. Coca-Cola is known to always be one step ahead of the game and for that I commend you Coca-Cola! Here are a couple of pictures that were tweeted last night 🙂
