Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas, the bilingual/bicultural entertainment destination for Latinos in the US, announces the premier of the new docu-series The Ricardo Laguna Project under Executive Producers Wilmer Valderrama and RelativityREAL. The new series takes a look inside the outrageously amusing life of bilingual/bicultural BMX star Ricardo Laguna as he attempts to break 3 world records and start his own family business – all while balancing his close knit Latin family and the enticing social scene in Las Vegas. Tr3s will produce eight 30-minute episodes of The Ricardo Laguna Project, which premiers every Wednesday at 9pm (ET), starting March 14th, 2012.

“Ricardo Laguna is a relatable young guy who’s experiencing the same bicultural realities of our audience – striving to stand out, embracing his Hispanic and American ethnicity, conquering new opportunities and keeping his family unit strong,” said Charlie Singer, SVP of Creative & Content for Tr3s. “He is unbelievably passionate about life and will be an incredible role model for our audience.”

“I have a passion for riding and being a part of the community – whether I’m helping kids or building huge dirt jumps at events – and of course I have a lot of fun along the way as it is Vegas, but I’m trying to do it all while building my brand AND in a way that makes my parents proud,” BMX champ Ricardo Laguna. “There aren’t really any Hispanic riders in BMX that give back so I’m hoping I can be a role model to some of the kids out there. All in a day’s work and I can’t wait for the world to see it!”

“When I met Ricardo, I immediately discovered a disarming, charming and inspiring young man with a vision larger than even his whole family expected. I related to him on so many levels. Ricardo and his family remind me and all of us the reason why we move away from our countries and come to America to embark in the search of the American dream,” commented Valderrama.

Moving from La Paz, Mexico to the states at the age of 13 was a struggle but looking back Ricardo merits his familia for his extraordinary bilingual/bicultural experience. Even after turning pro at 21, Ricardo chose to continue living with his parents. Now at 29, he’s left the nest but didn’t stray too far from home or dinner time with family. Ricardo has been riding for more than a decade and holds multiple titles including the Best Latin-American Dirt Jumper in 2004. Since then, the BMX renaissance man has joined the X Games, competed nationwide and mentored youth across the country – all while keeping a steady (and responsible) presence in the Las Vegas social scene.

The Ricardo Laguna Project is produced by RelativityREAL and Myra Santiago, Director of Production for Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas. Wilmer Valderrama and RelativityREAL’s Tom Forman, Brad Bishop and David Brown serve as Executive Producers.

WHICH STATE BLOCKED THE VOTER ID LAW?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Judge Blocks Voter I.D. Law

A Dane County judge has granted a temporary injunction against Wisconsin’s new voter identification law. Circuit Judge David Flanagan granted the injunction Tuesday, meaning the law would not apply for the April 3 presidential primary election. The NAACP‘s Milwaukee branch and immigration rights group Voces de la Frontera filed the lawsuit last year. A trial on a permanent injunction is scheduled for April 16.

“It’s a solid victory for voting rights and all voters in the state of Wisconsin,” said Richard Saks, attorney for the NAACP, who said the group was planning a news conference later Tuesday.

The Journal Sentinel added this to a later version of the story:

Flanagan’s 11-page order covered the history of Wisconsin Supreme Court rulings upholding votes even when they may have run afoul of technical procedural requirements imposed by the Legislature, and distinguished Wisconsin’s voter ID law from Indiana’s voter ID law that was recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme CourtHe also relied on the testimony and reports of the plaintiffs’ expert, professor Kenneth Mayer, whose work concluded there were more than 220,000 constitutionally qualified voters in Wisconsin who don’t have the type of ID required under Act 23, as well as affidavits from 40 residents describing the costs and difficulties they encountered while trying to obtain photo ID to allow them to vote.

Flanagan found the impact of the law hit disproportionately hard on the elderly, indigent and minorities.

“The scope of the impairment has been shown to be serious, extremely broad and largely needless,” Flanagan wrote. “There is no doubt that the plaintiffs have shown a very substantial likelihood of success on the merits.” There are multiple suits against the law: This separate case is pending.

WHO ARE “THE LITTLE BROWN ONES” IN UNISON WITH THE GOP?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

"More than five years later, Bush, who along with two siblings was dubbed one of “the little brown ones” by his grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, is in Austin discussing how the 18-month-old Hispanic Republicans of Texas Political Action Committee, which he co-founded, moves ahead after redistricting."

The seeds of political ascension for a member of the Bush family may have been planted in an Austin eatery whose name conjures up images of Janis Joplin jam sessions.

After Election Day in 2006, George P. Bush — the son of former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida and the nephew of former President George W. Bush — met with a friend at Threadgill’s to discuss how to propel more Hispanics within the ranks of the Republican Party.

More than five years later, Bush, who along with two siblings was dubbed one of “the little brown ones” by his grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, is in Austin discussing how the 18-month-old Hispanic Republicans of Texas Political Action Committeewhich he co-founded, moves ahead after redistricting.

“There really wasn’t an entity that was focused on the campaign finance element of Hispanic outreach, nor was there really an entity that was doing the blocking and tackling and mechanics of educating Latinos to actually run for office,” Bush, a 35-year-old lawyer, said of the PAC’s genesis.

Its board includes lawyers, former aides to government officials, advertising executives and a professor, who are working to reach a traditionally blue-collar demographic. Bush said that is part of the message.

“They represent the American dream and are less than a generation from very humble origins,” Bush said of the board members, who have endorsed candidates from myriad backgrounds.

“This organization is also meant to be aspirational, and I think the Hispanic community is aspirational,” said Bush, whose mother is from Mexico.

Democrats say the PAC faces an uphill battle.

“They are delusional if they think they’re making any inroads with Latinos,” said Rebecca Acuña, a Texas Democratic Party spokeswoman. “In Texas, there are 668 Democratic Hispanic elected officials to the 60 in the Republican Party.”

Though Bush is careful when speaking about his own goals, he says he is inextricably linked to politics. For now, however, he is content with his role with the PAC.

His future political success could hinge on how Republicans move forward on specific issues. He supports portions of the DREAM Act, and said he thinks most Republicans would also favor at least certain aspects of it, including a pathway toward legalization for illegal immigrants if they serve in the military.

He also calls himself a “George W. Bush” Republican on other aspects of immigration reform.

“That is essentially securing the border, placing an importance on that,” he said. “In terms of folks already here? Figure out a way where they can be taken out of the shadows and contribute to society and provide an opportunity to contribute and pay their fair share.”

Like his uncle, he also supports the U.S. government’s efforts to aid Mexico in that country’s battles against organized crime.

“My opinion is that we both have a vested national security interest and increasingly [the cartel wars] are infringing upon our national security,” he said. “Therefore, collaboration at the highest level is called for and that means continued collaboration on intelligence and information-sharing.”

It was under President George W. Bush that the U.S. and Mexico signed the Mérida Initiative, an aid package of about $1.5 billion that provides equipment, technology and training to Mexico.

George P. Bush said he wishes he spoke more Spanish, his first language, but it has faded from his life due to a lack of practice. He advocates that Hispanics in America should learn English.

“Whether we like it or not, it is the language of commerce in our country,” he said. “That is not meant to be in a dispirited tone.”

Bush knows speculation about his future will persist. In some circles he has already been dubbed “47.” The talk is flattering, he said.

“I’d love to keep the door open. Politics is in my blood,” he said.

DID HISPANIC NEWS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT

In this election year, the candidates are treating the Univisions and Telemundos of the world the same as they do many English-language networks.

The Hispanic news media clearly are not only playing a significant role in coverage of the primaries, they also have the respect of all the major candidates. The GOP hopefuls seem to be treating Hispanic media on par with their English-language networks, if not going out of their way to be sure they make their points to Hispanic voters.

The major Spanish-language news outlets also has a partner in an English-language outlet, be it CNN and CNN en Espanol, Telemundo and NBC, or Univision and ABC News. Even Fox News Latino–which exists only online and does not have its own TV outlet–is expanding, releasing its first ever poll yesterday.

The partnerships have been beneficial:

Hudson says this is the first time in national political elections that CNN en Espanol has been cobranded with CNN and shared in coverage. “It’s the first time that the network has been perceived to be a major asset to English-language CNN,” she says. “We launched our primary coverage last July. Since then we have been doing tagteam coverage with CNN. We cosponsor the debates with CNN and we carry all of them live, translating them into Spanish. And our political analyst, Marisa Cardona, also appears on CNN.”Telemundo’s Falcon says her network’s partnership with NBC News “is extremely important to us, a very valuable asset.” She adds that Telemundo plans to cover every Republican caucus and primary going forward, offering coverage across all of its platforms. She says while extra emphasis will be on covering states with large Hispanic populations, all primaries will be covered. Falcon also says Telemundo will expand Enfoque from a half-hour to an hour in the near future.

WHY SHOULD COMPANIES INVEST IN HISPANIC MARKETING?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

More Hispanics in College Will Add to Consumer Spending Growth

Higher Education Leads to Higher Income

A study by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that there was a 24% increase in Hispanic college enrollment between 2009 and 2010. This exceeds the population increase among the Hispanic 18-24 demographic (7%) over the same period, which indicates a trend in strides in educational awareness among the Hispanic community.

Growing Hispanic Education Level

Record High School Completion & College Enrollment

Hispanic high school completion reached a record 73% in 2010, up 3% from the year prior. Additionally, strides to move these kids from high school to college have paid off: 44% of those Hispanic students completing high school are going on to college, up from 39% in 2009.

What This Means for Marketers

With college graduates on average earning 1.5 times more than those with only a high school degree, these trends put the Hispanic youth catching up with their non Hispanic counterparts not only in terms of educational attainment but also in terms of income level. US Hispanic consumer spending is on track to reach $1.4 trillion by 2014, and with continuing increases in income levels among these young Latinos, real levels could outpace these projections. Marketers should be looking to include Hispanic marketing strategies into their annual plans in order to capture this growing population’s loyalty and purchases.
