ARE HISPANICS A ‘GOLD MINE’ FOR MARKETERS?

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

The numbers from the U.S. Census dazzle.  One out of six residents of America is Hispanic. Over the past decade this group grew 43%.  By 2014, its purchasing power will reach more than $1.5 trillion.  Mmmmm, if you think about it they will eventually constitute the 10th largest economy in the world.  This should be a gold mine for marketers.  But, it isn’t, at least not yet.  Investors have to be cautious about companies gushing about the potential.  That might all it turns out to be – potential.

Who’s Tapping Into the Surging Hispanic Market?

The reality is that the Hispanic market is a tough nut to crack, at least for outsiders, that is those who aren’t Hispanic.  Too many marketers made that same wrong assumption in pitching the over-50 audience, which is really at least three very different segments. In addition, each generation of Hispanics brings its own changes, including in language abilities, preferences, and nuance.  As we know, a generational shift in our digital fast time can happen every few years or even sooner.

Trade publication MOBILE DEMYSTIFIED points out that Verizon (NYSEVZ) Wireless hit a homerun with an ad during the Copa America.  It is written in “Spanglish,” a mash-up of Spanish and English. Verizon has been close enough to the customer to get this idiomatic way of speaking down cold.  Maybe that has plenty to do with why Verizon is the leader in wireless and can charge the highest fees.  Its stock price at 39 is very near the 52-week high.

As for Hispanic values, they’re as many-layered as they are with any group. The innate diversity of just about any culture becomes clear when someone is paying attention to what’s really going on in the culture, which is actually loosely connected clusters of subcultures.  Therefore, pitching to the supposed dominance of the family in Hispanic life could be off the money with large parts of the poulation. That’s because more and more are consumed business owners, including the women.

According to HispanTelligence, in the next six years, Hispanic-owned businesses in the US are expected to grow almost 42% to 4.3 million with total revenues of $539 billion. Being an entrepreneur pulls in the emotions and economic survival of many others. Therefore, marketers have to tap into the broad-based drive to make it in America.

So, how can companies understand this multi-faceted Hispanic market? One approach has been to become an insider.  Here are some examples of that:

Providing Opportunity

Way back when IBM (NYSE: IBM) was expanding its reach around the world it developed a new model.  It knew that to succeed it had to become an insider.  It did that by creating economic opportunity for the natives of the nations in which it was establishing businesses.  Not only did IBM provide good jobs but it also developed the residents for positions of top leadership.  Eventually, the country manager was a native.  An added goody was that the IBM brand became the symbol of global good corporate citizenship.  AT&T (NYSE:T) is mirroring that pattern, only domestically. About 12% of its workforce is Hispanic, with a number reaching the top such as Chief Executive Officer and President of its Mobility and Consumer Markets Ralph de la Vega.  Almost 19% of its purchases are from minority vendors.

Finding the Right Dance Partner

There’s the age-old business question whether to grow a business internally or graft on another company’s successful enterprise. Investors recognize how critical this decision is, always questioning what would be cheaper and quicker with the best odds for success. DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH), the third largest pay-TV provider, has decided to go the second way – joining forces with a proven entity in the Hispanic space. Why reinvent the wheel?  It has entered a multi-year agreement with Univision Communications, the leader in Hispanic America media.  Together the two are launching new networks for sports, soap operas (popularity of “Downton Abbey” showed that genre isn’t dead), news including from Mexico and Latin America, and entertainment. Since many alliances come undone, this is one investors will be monitoriing for cracks.  Rumor has it that AOL’s acquisition of Huffington Post isn’t going so hot, not in spirit and not in profits.

Being There To Help

image from White House website

Help, as every businessperson knows, is a two-way street.  Doing good often is the platform for doing well.  Members of the Fortune 500 such as JP Morgan Chase(NYSE: JPM) have partnered with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) to be there with resources, ranging from know-how to networks.  For example, JP Morgan Chase’s Vice President of the Office of Corporate Responsibility Peter R. Villegas chairs USHCC’s Senior Executive Corporate Advisory Board.  That group, as its name indicates, advises the USHCC on business and policy issues which could impact Hispanic entrepreneurs.  One of USHCC’s missions is to increase vendor contracts with corporations and government.  Another is to encourage Hispanic youth to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

The first challenge is for the outsider to get inside.  Next comes the ongoing need to keep creating value.  That’s what investors should keep their eye on when predicting the company’s profits from the Hispanic market.

PRESIDENT OBAMA RESPONDS: WHY IMMIGRATION REFORM WAS NOT PASSED IN FIRST TERM

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

On GOP‘s Super Tuesday, Obama Talks Immigration Reform

President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday that his administration was unable to pass comprehensive immigration reform, a promise he made during his 2008 campaign, but said that was because immigration had become a partisan issue.

“When I came into office I said ‘I’m going to push to get this done.’ We didn’t get it done,” Obama said during a press conference at the White House. “The reason we haven’t got it done is because what used to be a bipartisan issue, agreement that we should fix this, ended up becoming a partisan issue.”

Obama was responding to a question about recent polls showing the president holding a favorable lead among Latinos against the GOP candidates in the run-up to November’s elections, despite growing disappointment among the community about the failure of any immigration reform.

A Fox News Latino/Latin Insights poll released Monday of likely Latino voters indicated that 73 percent of them approved of Obama’s performance in office, with over half those questioned looking favorably upon his handling of the healthcare debate and the economy, at 66 percent and 58 percent respectively.

More than half of the poll’s respondents, however, said they felt U.S. immigration policy was too strict and an overwhelming majority – 85 percent – would like to see undocumented immigrants have a chance to legalize their status. A huge percentage, 82 percent, believe undocumented immigrants do work that Americans will not do. They feel the undocumented workers help expand the economy.

“My hope is that after this election the Latino community will have sent a strong message that they want a bipartisan effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform that involves making sure that we got tough border security, and this administration has done more for border security than just about anybody,” Obama said, adding that immigration reform also needed to include making sure companies don’t take advantage of undocumented workers and that there was a clear path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

An overwhelming majority of those polled –nine out of ten– support the DREAM Act, which would allow undocumented immigrants brought as children to gain legal U.S. residency if they attend college or join the military.

Obama praised former President George W. Bush and his advisors for saying that immigration reform should not be something that just the Democrats support. “That was good advice then, it’s good advice now,” Obama said.

The president continued on to say that Congress needs to unify under this matter if any progress is going to be made toward passing immigration reform.

“Ultimately I can’t vote for Republicans. They’re going to have to come to the conclusion that this is good for the country and that this is something that they themselves think is important,” Obama said. “Depending on how Congress turns out, we’ll see how many Republican votes we’ll need to get it done.”

WILMER VALDERRAMA IN NEW THRILLER ‘AWAKE’

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Best known as his character Fez on “That 70’s Show,” Wilmer Valderrama will take on a very different role this season as Detective Vega, on NBC’S new thriller “Awake.”

The thriller premiered Thursday, March 1st.

“I’ve never played a cop before,” the actor told FOX News Latino. “I do a lot of stunts on the show and there is a lot of action that requires me to be very physical.”

“Awake” follows detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) who finds himself awake in two separate realities: one where his teen son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, “Saving Grace,”) died in a car crash and his wife, Hannah (Laura Allen, “Terriers”) survived, and another where Hannah has perished, leaving Michael and Rex to pick up the pieces. In order to keep both of his loved ones alive, Michael begins living in two dueling realities.

In the one-hour network drama, the Venezuelan actor plays two roles.

“In one reality I’m his partner as Detective Vega,” Valderrama said. “In the other world I play an LAPD officer.”

Valderrama said “to be able to play dual realities and have a character that’s alive in two different worlds,” has “proven to be one of the most fun and challenging characters I’ve played  in my career.”

The actor continued, “in every episode we solve two cases that intertwine with both realities,” “watching the episodes reminds of the feeling that I got when I first saw the X-Files.”

From playing a foreign exchange student in “That 70’s Show” to voicing an animated character in “Handy Manny” and hosting “Yo Momma” on MTV, Valderrama’s versatility cannot be denied.

For Valderrama shared with FOX News Latino his secret for surviving the movie-making industry.

“I came to America to work, I didn’t come to ask anybody for anything,” Valderrama said. “I came here to earn it.”

“I’ve been given an opportunity to go out there and  prove that I definitely belong in this industry,” he added.

“I’ve been around it for many years [and] as long as  I’m having a good time with it then people will buy it.”

Aside from acting, Valderrama has also created his own production company, WV Enterprises, whose main mission is to produce programming for both cable and network television.

His most recent producing project will premiere on MTV3 in March. The show, called the Ricardo Laguna project, focuses around a Mexican BMX biker who comes to the States in search of the American Dream.

Valderrama keeps in constant contact with his fan base through his twitter handle @WillyVille.

“I’m flattered that people follow me on twitter,” said Valderrama. “It’s important to keep a direct line with your fans.”

TR3S PRESENTS THE RICARDO LAGUNA PROJECT

THE HISPANIC BLOG IS THE LATEST HISPANIC NEWS BY JESSICA MARIE GUTIERREZ

Tr3s presents the bilingual/bicultural life of Mexican-American BMX pro &

Wilmer Valderrama & RelativityREAL Executive Produce new docu-series.

Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas, the bilingual/bicultural entertainment destination for Latinos in the US, announces the premier of the new docu-series The Ricardo Laguna Project under Executive Producers Wilmer Valderrama and RelativityREAL. The new series takes a look inside the outrageously amusing life of bilingual/bicultural BMX star Ricardo Laguna as he attempts to break 3 world records and start his own family business – all while balancing his close knit Latin family and the enticing social scene in Las Vegas. Tr3s will produce eight 30-minute episodes of The Ricardo Laguna Project, which premiers every Wednesday at 9pm (ET), starting March 14th, 2012.

“Ricardo Laguna is a relatable young guy who’s experiencing the same bicultural realities of our audience – striving to stand out, embracing his Hispanic and American ethnicity, conquering new opportunities and keeping his family unit strong,” said Charlie Singer, SVP of Creative & Content for Tr3s. “He is unbelievably passionate about life and will be an incredible role model for our audience.”

“I have a passion for riding and being a part of the community – whether I’m helping kids or building huge dirt jumps at events – and of course I have a lot of fun along the way as it is Vegas, but I’m trying to do it all while building my brand AND in a way that makes my parents proud,” BMX champ Ricardo Laguna. “There aren’t really any Hispanic riders in BMX that give back so I’m hoping I can be a role model to some of the kids out there. All in a day’s work and I can’t wait for the world to see it!”

“When I met Ricardo, I immediately discovered a disarming, charming and inspiring young man with a vision larger than even his whole family expected. I related to him on so many levels. Ricardo and his family remind me and all of us the reason why we move away from our countries and come to America to embark in the search of the American dream,” commented Valderrama.

Moving from La Paz, Mexico to the states at the age of 13 was a struggle but looking back Ricardo merits his familia for his extraordinary bilingual/bicultural experience. Even after turning pro at 21, Ricardo chose to continue living with his parents. Now at 29, he’s left the nest but didn’t stray too far from home or dinner time with family. Ricardo has been riding for more than a decade and holds multiple titles including the Best Latin-American Dirt Jumper in 2004. Since then, the BMX renaissance man has joined the X Games, competed nationwide and mentored youth across the country – all while keeping a steady (and responsible) presence in the Las Vegas social scene.

The Ricardo Laguna Project is produced by RelativityREAL and Myra Santiago, Director of Production for Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas. Wilmer Valderrama and RelativityREAL’s Tom Forman, Brad Bishop and David Brown serve as Executive Producers.
